wanting to start painting and drawing?
where do you start?
answer - RIGHT HERE!
I have started by putting a photograph on here and then showing the stages you need to do your own picture. I have included some helpful hints where possible. Don't worry too much at this stage about the materials - paper, pencil and a rubber and you are off!
Stage 1 photo of Castle Gate
stage 2 - using a HB pencil draw out roughly from the photo as below
now the next job is to apply a light water colour wash working from light to dark. That means putting your light washes in first i.e. I will start with the sky as I have identified it as one of the lightest area.
Stage 3 the colour wash
this is a primary wash showing the light and tone of the picture, allowing now for the detail to be added. By using this wash we have created the atmosphere of a warm sunny day.
slowly I am working on the shadow to make it stronger in the foreground and also gradually building on the tree areas.
next is to increase the tonal variation of the castle walls.
this is the finished sketch, trying to demonstrate light and tone.
Making a simple subject warm and interesting.
